Caffeine In Tea Vs Coffee

When it comes to coffee and tea, is one better than the other? To a large degree, the answer to this question depends on the goals of the drinker. In coffee, as well as in tea, there aren't a massive amount of vitamins and minerals, so we'll start by comparing the caffeine in tea vs. coffee. Of course, not every brand of coffee and tea is the same. Generally, black coffee has about 40 mg of caffeine per 100 grams. This is double the amount of the 20 mg of caffeine found in the same amount of black tea. If you're looking for a caffeine boost alone, coffee is the clear winner. But, if you can't stomach black coffee, black tea is still going to give you a good chunk of caffeine to get you going. Plus, there's more to consider.

The Caffeine in Tea and Coffee isn't the Same

The caffeine that you find in tea isn't the same as caffeine in coffee, and the feeling it gives you is different. To put it in plain language, the difference between caffeine in tea vs coffee is that tea caffeine gives you a calm, level-headed state of alertness. The kind of caffeine found in coffee gives you an overpowering caffeine high.

The kind of tea that you drink will also affect how much caffeine you get per cup. Black tea has the most caffeine, and as we mentioned, a cup of black tea has about half as much caffeine as a cup of black coffee. Green tea has roughly 25% as much caffeine as a cup of black coffee, and white tea has the least amount of caffeine. At the same time, white tea has the most health benefits of all the teas because it's the least oxidized.

The Health Benefits of Tea Vs. Coffee

Aside from the differences of caffeine in tea and coffee, there are lots of health benefits that should be considered as well. Usually, green tea gets all of the recognition for having considerable health benefits. However, green tea and black tea come from the same plants. The difference is that black tea is processed more. Black tea still has great benefits.  For example, it helps improve blood vessel function significantly, and the antioxidants found in both black and green teas help rid the body of free radicals. Coffee has not been shown to have nearly the amount of health benefits as tea has.

Of course, coffee has more caffeine than tea, but that's not always a good thing. Too much caffeine is bad for the heart. Many people who make the switch from coffee to tea find that they get a different kind of caffeine jolt than they got from their coffee, but the buzz is cleaner, and they place less stress on their hearts in the process.
